7 Easy Steps to Remove Vinyl Flooring

Here are the simple and easiest steps for successfully removing your vinyl floor:

1. Prepare Your Space

If you plan to remove the old vinyl floor and install a new one, you need to prepare your space first. Before starting the process, remove the furniture and other accessories from your space. After removing all the objects, clean your space. This preparation will help you cut baseboards more easily and speed up the removal process.

2. Take Off the Quarter-Round Trims

Many installers place the quarter-round trims between the baseboards and vinyl planks. These trims cover the gaps between baseboards and the floor, creating a seamless look. Therefore, before removing the vinyl planks, you should remove the quarter-round trim.

3. Remove the Baseboard Trims

If your vinyl flooring has baseboard trims, you need to remove them before removing the vinyl flooring. To remove all the baseboards, take a pry bar and keep it between the wall and the baseboards. The pry bar should be a few inches above the baseboards. When you properly place the pry bar, force it to remove all baseboard trims. If you are unable to lift the baseboard trims with a pry bar, try using a mallet or hammer.

4. Remove the Vinyl Floor

If you see that your vinyl planks are glued down only 6 inches, you can easily remove the floor. To do this, cut the planks 8 inches above the perimeter and lift the planks from the interior portion. The planks will pull off easily. If you are unsuccessful, try the next steps.

5. Cut the Vinyl Planks Into Strips

Use a utility knife to cut the vinyl planks into strips. Cut the planks into longer or thinner strips, making sure the strips’ length does not exceed 8 inches. After cutting the strips, roll them up to use them again in any other areas of your interior.

6. Detach the Glued-Down Portion of Flooring

If your vinyl flooring is glued down, remove the glued-down portion. Use a pry bar to gently scrape off as much of the glue as possible. If the glue is hardened and can’t be removed with a pry bar, look for the sharp edge tool. You can use the 5-in-1 tool to gently detach the glue.

7. Loosen the Adhesive of Vinyl Boards

After using the pry bar or 5-in-1 tool, if you are unable to remove the glue properly, use the heat gun. Apply the heat gun to the planks to loosen the glue or adhesives, and you can easily lift the vinyl boards. However, it is advisable not to keep the heat gun too close to planks, as it can damage them. Additionally, wear gloves for your safety and protection.

Mistakes to Avoid When Taking Off the Vinyl Flooring

Here are some mistakes you must avoid when removing vinyl and laminate flooring

  • Ignoring Floor Preparation

Some people ignore the floor preparation, which leads to several troubleshooting issues. For example, if you don’t clean the dirt or grime before vinyl removal, it may leave a messy space. Additionally, most people do not take subfloor preparation seriously, such as repairing damage or uneven spots.

  • Use of Improper Tools

Using the wrong tools to remove vinyl tiles is another mistake most people make. For example, they may use the household scraper to remove the vinyl planks, resulting in damage to the vinyl. Therefore, you should use the specific floor scraper with an attached demolition hammer to gently lift the planks.

  • Neglecting the Safety Considerations

Whether you are removing SPC flooring or vinyl flooring, following safety precautions is necessary. Some DIYers do not wear gloves, knee pads, or safety glasses, which can lead to sudden injuries or skin irritation.

  • Not Cutting Vinyl Into Strips

The vinyl sheets must be cut into strips before they can be removed properly. However, a few people do not cut the sheets into strips or cut the wide strips, which makes the removal process difficult.

  • Misusing the Heat Gun

The heat gun is used to loosen stubborn adhesives on the vinyl floor. Misusing the heat gun, such as keeping it too close to flammable materials, can cause vinyl planks to warp. Additionally, it can also be hazardous to your health.

  • Not Removing the Old Adhesive

Some flooring installers do not remove the old adhesive or backing while removing the vinyl flooring. This results in subfloor damage, leading to a harder, improper installation of new flooring, such as wooden flooring.
